Evaluation of the efficiency of electrocoagulation process in removing cyanide, nitrate, turbidity, and chemical oxygen demand from landfill leachate

Background: Leachate contains toxic and non-biodegradable substances that are not easily treated by conventional treatment methods. This study investigated the effect of pH, current density, reaction time parameters on removal cyanide (CN- ), nitrate (NO3- turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD) from leachate electrocoagulation process. Methods: was an experimental one with direct using four parallel bipolar aluminum electrodes 90% purity. The length, width, thickness were 5 cm, 10 2 mm, respectively. There 6 holes a diameter 0.7 cm each electrodes. samples prepared old solid waste landfill in Ghaemshahr, Iran. Results: In this study, at density 33 mA/cm2 60 minutes, optimum efficiency (100 %) obtained pH 5.5 10. Moreover, maximum (99.65 turbidity (86.41 8.3, respectively highest COD (83.14 Conclusion: results showed cyanide, nitrate, increases increasing time. Due to proper electrocoagulation, amounts less than allowable contamination level. Based results, is considered efficient effective method for removing municipal wastes.
